Purpose

The Irish Forest School Association (IFSA) exists to support, represent and connect Forest School practitioners across Ireland while promoting high-quality, playful, nature-based learning rooted in custodianship of the natural world.

This Code of Conduct sets out the standards of behaviour expected of all IFSA members. It reflects our shared values and supports the aims of the Association, helping to ensure that Forest School in Ireland is represented with professionalism, integrity and care.

Membership of IFSA signifies a commitment to uphold this Code.

Our Vision

An Ireland where all children have access to Forest School in native broadleaf woodland, through which they can grow lifelong and caring relationships with nature, the land and with each other.

Our Mission

To support, represent and connect Forest School practitioners across Ireland, promoting high-quality, playful nature-based learning rooted in custodianship of the natural world.

Members will:

1. Uphold the Forest School Philosophy

Members will:

• Promote the Forest School philosophy accurately and responsibly.
• Represent Forest School using the definitions and principles adopted by IFSA.
• Support high-quality Forest School practice.
• Encourage understanding of the benefits of Forest School within communities, education and society.
• Celebrate the work and achievements of fellow practitioners.

2. Act Professionally

Members will:

• Conduct themselves with honesty, integrity and professionalism.
• Respect the reputation of IFSA and the wider Forest School community.
• Comply with relevant Irish legislation and professional responsibilities.
• Maintain appropriate safeguarding, health and safety and insurance arrangements where applicable.
• Respect confidentiality where required.
• Represent their qualifications and experience accurately.

3. Care for Nature

Members recognise that caring for nature is central to Forest School practice.

Members will:

• Minimise environmental impact.
• Promote biodiversity and sustainable practice.
• Respect woodland habitats and wildlife.
• Harvest natural materials only where permission has been granted and sustainable methods are used.
• Continue developing their understanding of environmental stewardship.

4. Treat Others with Respect

Members will:

• Treat all people with dignity, kindness and respect.
• Foster welcoming, inclusive and supportive learning environments.
• Communicate openly, honestly and professionally.
• Respect professional boundaries.
• Seek to resolve disagreements constructively.
• Develop positive communication and relationships with other Forest School providers in your area to respect each others’ catchment areas and client groups.  
• Not engage in bullying, intimidation, harassment or abusive behaviour.

5. Champion Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Members will:

• Welcome people of all backgrounds, identities and abilities.
• Promote equitable access to Forest School.
• Challenge discrimination where appropriate.
• Help create environments where everyone feels safe, respected and valued.

6. Commit to Learning

Members recognise that professional learning is ongoing.

Members are encouraged to:

• Reflect regularly on their practice.
• Engage in continuing professional development each year.
• Share knowledge and resources.
• Support fellow practitioners.
• Contribute to the development of Forest School in Ireland.

7. Support the Association

Members will:

• Respect IFSA branding and intellectual property.
• Use the ‘Member of IFSA’ logo only in accordance with IFSA guidance.
• Participate positively in the work of the Association where possible.
• Act in ways that support the Vision, Mission and Values of IFSA.

Members are expected to comply with this Code throughout their membership.
